It was a winter evening. I was sitting at the bar in one of the Vienna variety theatres. A man occupied a place near me.
- What are you doing in Vienna?
- Singing - he replied - my name is Christopher Cross, and what are you doing? - he
addressed the question at me.
-I amuse people - was my answer.
- Are you doing it alone?
- No, not alone, with my family.
- Since long? - he enquired, evidently interested.
- Since about 200 years ...
Christopher Cross treated me to a drink.
In course of years-long stage work we had an occasion to answer such questions for many times.
I realized then how important for our audience is the element of professional tradition introduced by us onto stage.
We have learned to benefit abundantly form our generations experiences and to enjoy perfoming our job. A certain nun told me after my performance: "You seem to have only comic genes..." I could not object.
